The current study aimed to examine the efficacy of a step-down approach compared with a standard group-based BWLP. The programme was designed to provide all participants with the knowledge and tools to make healthy lifestyle choices through participation in weekly group meetings. Participants in the control condition remained in a weight loss group throughout the 18-week intervention, while those in the SC condition had the opportunity to be stepped down to less-intensive treatment based on progress during two assessment periods, at weeks 6 and 12. Participants remaining in the group class may benefit from the continued accountability and instruction the class offers, while those stepped down may benefit from opportunities to practise engaging in healthy behaviours through guided SH, thus building self-efficacy and other skills implicated in weight loss maintenance.
