The mud crab hatchery design should ensure that all functional areas are adequately
separated to minimize the risk of pathogens spreading between different parts of the
operation. Broodstock, hatching tanks, larval rearing and live food areas need to be
treated as separate units from a biosecurity perspective. It is also worth mentioning that
areas where equipment is cleaned and sterilized should be away from operational areas
in order to minimize the risk of contamination by aerosol. Design and operational
guidelines should minimize staff movement between areas. Staff that are required to
move between functional areas should clean or sterilize their hands and footwear to
minimize transmission of pathogens.
