Family support for eating healthy was measured using 6 items adapted from Sallis et al and 2 new items. Participants were asked how often in the past month others in their household encouraged them to avoid unhealthy foods, reminded them to eat fruits and vegetables, and ate high-fat or high-salt foods in front of them, among other behaviors. The score was calculated as the mean of the items after reverse-coding negative items. Cronbach alpha was .70. Prior studies have documented Cronbach alpha ranging from .45 to .52.
