From feature phones to sensor-rich smartphones. Much like the PC brought computing to the general public, smartphones
have brought both pervasive computing and pervasive sensing to themasses. Starting in the second part of the past decade,
human-centric pervasive sensing has been rapidly raised to prominence thanks to the uptake of sensor-equipped smartphones
[9]. From a technological standpoint, this trend has been fueled by the advances in microelectromechanical systems
(MEMS) that resulted in increasingly smaller sensor hardware. Thanks to MEMS miniaturization, mobile phones can accommodate
miniaturized accelerometers, gyroscopes, 3-axis magnetometers, and barometers within their compact form factor.
