Vat xiengthong was built in 1560 by King sayasethathirat, and was the last temple constructed in the ancient capital before the set of the government was moved to Vientiane, it was the only monastery to escape the 1887 fire and sacking of the town, and is a prime example of the Luang prabang style of temple architecture
