Dementia impairs the individuals’ ability to understand and
express information, plan and solve problems (Draper,
2004). Other dementia-related impairments such as memory
loss, as well as the hospital setting and acute illness tend to
exacerbate communication problems (Frazier-Rios &
Zembrzuski, 2005). Disruptive behaviour is often a form of
communication for the person with dementia (Kolanowski
et al., 2002).
