When KUVO went on the air in 1985, the local radio scene included one FM jazz sta¬tion, KADX based in Castle Rock, 30 miles south of Denver, and one Spanish-language station, KBNO, an AM frequency, KDKO, an African American owned .station with a weak AM frequency, played rhythm, blues, and soul. KADX went off the air in 1987. From November 1994 to January 1995. eight stations changed ownership hands, including KHIH (co-owned with KHOW-AM), which eventually began to promote itself as "Smooth Jazz Colorado Style." The new owners set out to make KHIH worth $5 million, the amount for which several other stations had recently been sold or traded.
