Care workers must ensure that correct procedures for
infection control are adhered to, such as handwashing
before and after attending to an individual’s personal
hygiene needs and wearing the appropriate protective
clothing, such as aprons and gloves (Marshall et al, 2012).
Other people involved in supporting an individual with
a disability to maintain personal hygiene needs, such as
family members, friends and other health practitioners,
should be made aware of the risks associated with carrying
out personal hygiene care, and staff must ensure there is a
consistent approach adopted for the personal care needs of
the individual.
