The difficult tasks of controlling costs, improving quality and patient safety, and maintaining and/or increasing access to care continue to challenge the U.S. healthcare system (Claiborne et al., 2009). This challenge intensifies as longer life spans and aging baby boomers are anticipated to double the population of Americans aged 65 and older to approximately 71 million or 20% of the U.S. population by 2030 (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2007)
