This story in the Pali Tipitaka indicates that the Buddha encouraged his followers were to propagate Buddhism in a peaceful way. The main message that the Buddha has sent to world through missionary monks is peace (santi). Peace is the goal of the good life in Buddhism. As the Buddha said "natti santiparam sukham" there is no higher bliss than peace. Buddhism therefore is a religion of peace.
