Children with signs and symptoms of an STI should be tested before treatment is initiated. As in the case of other types of sexual assault, the time of evaluation after abuse is important. It is possible that the assault occurred too recently to detect infectious agents. Therefore, another examination in about 2 weeks could be needed. An additional 10 weeks might be required before antibodies can be detected.
