This study compares the effectiveness of the Kodaly Approach with the Traditional (combined) method of teaching music to elementary children. The research process lasted a total of eight weeks and was divided into two four week phrases. During phase one, research subjects studied and demonstrated music based upon a combination of different techniques (Traditional Method). During phase two, research subjects studied and demonstrated music based upon the Kodaly Approach. The study was conducted with a total of 11 first grade students, 4 girls and 7 boys. Concurrently with training in rhythm and beat, attention was given to in-tune singing using mostly familiar nursery rhymes, simple songs, singing games and chants. An independent t-test was used to determine if there was a significant difference between the means of the two groups. Although the mean score of the traditional group was higher than that of the Kodaly group, there was no significant difference between the two groups.
