In 2001, the AAP endorsed the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Recommen- dations for Using Fluoride to Prevent and Control Dental Caries in the United States.”15 Dental and governmental organizations (American Dental Associ- ation [ADA], American Academy of Pe- diatric Dentistry, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the CDC) have more recently published guidelines on the use of fluoride, but current AAP publications do not reflect these newer evidence-based guidelines. Table 1 provides a simple explanation of fluoride use for patients at low and high risk of caries.
