(n = 13,997) were treated with physical therapy or other
nonoperative treatments. Interestingly, the proportion of
injuries that needed surgical treatment was almost double
in players aged 30 years than in their younger counterparts
(P .05) (Table 1). According to the number of
days elapsed from the date of injury to the player’s return
to full participation, 19.2% (n = 2923) were slight injuries,
16.7% (n = 2539) were mild injuries, 16.8% (n = 2556) were
moderate injuries, and the remaining 47.4% (n = 7226)
were severe injuries requiring more than 21 days of treatment.
The distribution of the severity of the injuries was
very similar in players aged 30 years and those aged
30 years (Figure 1).
