The SDSCA scale (Toobert et al., 2000) assesses the history of self-care activities for persons with diabetes. The SDSCA
questionnaire uses the term “level of diabetes self-care” for the absolute frequency or consistency of behavior regimens.
The Chinese version of the SDSCA scale is a self-reported measure of the frequency of carrying out diabetes self-care
tasks and consists of 12 items that ask how often several activities, such as diet and exercise, are carried out over a
7 day period. The possible total scores range from 0 to 84 points, with higher scores indicating a higher frequency of
carrying out diabetes self-care activities (Wu et al., 2007). The psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the
SDSCA scale were tested in the Taiwanese population. Since then, it has become a popular instrument in Taiwan. The
internal consistency showed the Cronbach’s alpha to be 0.96 and the test–retest reliability to be 0.79 (Wu et al., 2007).The
Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the SDSCA scale in this study was 0.74.
