Further, given the range of functions of the device, it is nonsensical and uneconomical to use the device exclusively, or even principally, as a watch. As noted above, the time keeping function of the device is merely a replication of the same feature on the iPhone and as such the user already has the capability to tell time accurately from their iPhone without the use of the device. Subsequently it is highly unlikely that a consumer would buy the device solely for the purpose of it functioning as a time keeping device given that function is already achieved by the iPhone or with an ordinary mechanical watch. Furthermore, the watch function on the device needs to be triggered by pressing the screen button as opposed to a traditional watch when time is always available to be read without needing to be triggered first. On that basis, it is clear that the ability of the device to keep time while attached to the user’s wrist is merely an ancillary function to the essential character, which is the ability to transmit data within a wireless network from your wrist to extend the range of features of the iPhone.
