Its oxidised, reddish colour provides evidence that these depositional events were likely short-lived flooding episodes, which either filled the lake to a minor lake level (i.e. below ~1.2mAHD) or were too short to modify the shoreline. These scenarios agree with
the ostracod populations in the distal splay sediments underlying the lake floor (F2, Fig. 4) with dominant D. dietzi and lesser numbers of Reticypris sp. and P. baueri, indicating the likelihood of water salinity greater than 70‰ (De Deckker, 1982).
