Aquatic insects sampling

The aquatic insect composition andabundance from the sampled months weresummarized in Table 1. Twelve families wereidentified from a total of 4,257 individuals collectedduring the sampling period. The main taxonomicgroups encountered were Ephemeroptera,Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Odonata andDiptera. The order Ephemeroptera and Hemipterahad the highest number of family (each 3 families)out of the 12 family found. The highest (9 families)in term of taxa diversity was found in June and waslowest in August, September and April. It was alsonoticed that the individual of family Hydropsychidaeand Chironomidae were found to be highest at allthe sampling period. The number of individual ofaquatic insect was found to be maximum (627individuals) in the month of November, which maybe due to the presence of riparian vegetation andsuitable substrates. The riparian vegetation mayprovide them protection from predators and suitableenvironment for the growth of periphytic algae,which is an important food source for many aquaticinsects. Most of the aquatic insects utilize plants asa direct food source, sites for oviposition and sourceof respiratory oxygen12. Lowest aquatic insectindividuals were found during dry season (Marchto May), started increasing in June and remainedat high levels up to the month of July anddramatically decreased during wet season. Largeloads of clay brought into the water bodies bynearby areas during wet season, induced a highsedimentation of fine particles and disturbances ofthe littoral zone.
