The brahman breed was developed in the United States from the blending of three breeds of Indian cattle-the Gir, the Guzerat, and the Nellore.
The brahman is a medium-sized breed, producing medium-sized calves with generally light weaning weights.
It is horned and varies in color from light grey, mottled, to almost black.
It is humped at the back of the neck, which is a continuation of muscles from the shoulder.
It has long pendulous ears and loose pendulous skin along the dewlap, sheath and throat.
It possesses small muscles under the skin, which allow it to "twitch" its hide to repel insects.
A yellow secretion is also noted on the neck, which is reported by some to be a natural insect repellent.
