Although the conversion of the base-catalyzed transesterification
provides a higher FAME conversion in a shorter time, the
use of KOH hinders the separation of FAME, glycerol, a valuable
by-product, and the catalyst (Parawira, 2009; Fukuda et al., 2008;
Ranganathan et al., 2008). However, the slower reaction time and
higher cost of lipase have a negative impact on its economic
feasibility. To fully test the economic feasibility of utilising lipase
in industrial processes, more studies have to be conducted to test
the reusability of the lipase.
