(c) Ill-designed coastal structures. Many coastal structures have
been inserted into the coastal system. Some were incorrectly
configured and some simply disregarded potential negative
effects. For example, T-groins were placed so far apart that the
waves could penetrate into the gaps and erode the road
(Fig. 3b). A groin was constructed to prevent the sand from
depositing but it totally ignored erosion that would occur at the
downdrift side (Fig. 3c).
