had witnessed anyone dying from the sport and whether they had suffered any serious BASE
jumping accident.
Injuries were rated according to severity using the abbreviated injury scale (AIS). The AIS
is an anatomically based scoring system to determine the severity of single injury based on the
survivability of the injury (Joint Committee on Injury Scaling., 1980). The AIS is categorized
as 1 (minor), 2 (moderate), 3 (severe, not life-threatening), 4 (serious, life threatening), 5
(critical, survival uncertain), and 6 (maximum, currently untreatable).
