Jazmine Casafranca, Program Assistant at FAO Peru, reported that from 1992 to 2012 hunger and malnutrition fell from 7 million to 2.7 million. Casafranca explained that Peru has accomplished the biggest reduction in this region of South America. This part of the continent, however still suffers as 47 million continue to experience hunger and malnutrition.
“The case of Peru has been significant, as it is one of the countries that have met the Millennium target of reducing malnutrition. The goal was achieved thanks to the support of governments, social society, private sector; we are all involved in the fight against malnutrition,” Casafranca told Andina.
Casafranca explained that internationally as well, the number of chronically hungry people has decreased to 800 million from 1 billion. Thanks to governments placing hunger at the forefront of their agendas in the recent years, programs and improved strategies have dramatically decreased this number.
Casafranca added, although Peruvian policy has been instated since 2000, it has not been easy to maintain as a primary issue.
