As Exhibit 4-8 illustrates, an activity-based costing (ABC) system first traces costs
to activities and then to products and other cost objects. The underlying assumption is that activities consume resources, and products and other cost objects consume activities.
In designing an ABC system, there are six essential steps, as listed in Exhibit 4-9.
