...In this unit,you will learn how to organize a compare-and-contrast paragraph.
When we compare,we look at the similarities between two things,two people,two ideas,etc.When we contrast,we look at the differences.
There are two ways of organizing your paragraph when you compare and contrast. Plan A and Plan B are outlines of the two ways you can organize your compare-and-contrast paragraph.
Look at the outlines and then look at the model paragraph just given.Which outline does it follow-Plan A or Plan B?How many similarities can you see in the model paragraph?How many differences can you aee in the model paragraph.

Transitions showing contrast:however
However connect an idea in the first sentence with a contrasting idea in the second sentence. However tells the reader that an idea opposite from the one in the first sentence will follow.However has the same meaning as but.However is used mostly in formal writing.Notice the punctuation used with however.Both of the following examples have the same meaning.
....In California,children go to school until age sixteen,in Oregon,they go to school until age eighteen.
....Now underline the transition however in the reading passage and in the model paragraph.Next,look at the punctuation with however .Go back and circle all the punctuation marks with however.
..connect the following sentences with however.use however with both kinds of punctuation
..Transitions showing similarity:similarly and likewise
...the transitions similarly and likewise connect an idea in the first sentence with a similar idea in the second sentence.Similarly or likewise introduces the second sentence. Use a comma after similarly or likewise.
