differences among the pure stands might be due to adaptation of the species to the available soil moisture. The grasses, especially A. gayanus were better yielders than the legumes probably because of their root systems. For this could make them better adapted to the water fluctuations in the soil. Among the legumes, C. pubescens appeared less adapted to the dry periods for it was more produc- tive than the D. leiocarpum only in the wet periods. D. leiocarpum on the other hand showed greater adaptation than the C. pubescens in the dry periods by yielding higher.
