Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine was approved for the treatment of opioid dependence with the Drug Treatment Act of 2000. The act changed addiction treatment protocols by permitting office-based clinicians to manage substance abuse maintenance therapy. To date, buprenorphine has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of opioid dependence in pregnancy. However, evidence-based guidelines published by SAMHSA document that the benefits of drug outweigh the risks of its use in pregnancy; thus buprenorphine is used in current practice.
