Wat Chaiyathit is a very old temple dating back to the early Ayutthaya period, a fact attested to by the discovery, under a section of ground between the ordination and prayer halls, of a mass of bricks, each pierced by eight holes. This design of brick was popular at that time. The ordination hall is quite small with a ceiling comprised of individual planks of wood, so it looks much more uneven than the perfectly level ceilings in more recently constructed temples. Transverse beams support some sections of the structure. The most outstanding feature here are murals decorating the interior walls. A rendition of the Lord Buddha subduing Mara has been painted on a side wall (whereas during a later period, between the late Ayutthaaya and early Rattanakosin eras, it was traditional to place this image on the wall opposite the principal Buddha statue). The most adimired of all the murals here show devaraban (deva guardian spirits). They have been painted directly onto the white walls between the window openings; the scene depicted in each is unique.
