New Delhi (dpa) - The Indian death toll from Cyclone Hudhud rose to at least 27 Tuesday, officials and news reports said.
The cyclone packing winds of around 195 kilometres per hour (kph) hit land on the south-eastern coast, near the city of Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh state Sunday.
Collapsing houses and trees across the state killed 21, disaster management officials said, including 16 in Vishakapatnam, one of the largest cities in the region and home to a major naval base.
Three deaths were confirmed in the neighbouring state of Orissa and another three people died in nearby Madhya Pradesh, according to broadcaster NDTV.
Relief workers and soldiers were clearing roads of trees and toppled power lines in Vishakapatnam Tuesday.
There was no electricity in most parts of the city and residents complained of shortages of drinking water, milk and food.
The city’s airport was shut down for repairs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was due to visit the region later Tuesday.
Cyclones often form over the Bay of Bengal from April to November, bringing high winds, rain and flooding to India’s southern and eastern coasts.
