American Art (60 minutes)
The American Art Collection at the Newark Museum includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper and multimedia art surveying four centuries.

Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries: Collections include Colonial and Federal portraits, Hudson River landscape paintings by artists including Thomas Cole, Frederic Church and Albert Bierstadt. The American folk art collection includes the work of Ammi Phillips and Edward Hicks. The collection of American Impressionism and later 19th century art includes major works by Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, George Inness and Winslow Homer. Sculpture of the 19th century includes works by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French and John Rogers as well as Hiram Powers’ The Greek Slave.

American Modernism: America’s foremost modernists are represented, including Edward Hopper, Max Weber, Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Robert Henri, John Sloan, Arthur Dove, Theodore Rozsak, Charles Sheeler and Alexander Calder. The collection possesses one of the great landmarks of American art, Joseph Stella’s monumental Voice of the City of New York Interpreted and holds one of the greatest collections of geometric abstraction in the country. The Museum is the largest repository of works on paper created under the auspices of the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA)

Photography: A collection of over 100 vintage prints by the photographer Berenice Abbott as well as important photographs by Edward Steichen and Edward Weston. The Museum’s post-war photography collection includes examples by Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, and Andres Serrano

Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries: Holdings include world’s largest collection of sculpture by William Edmondson, works by Bill Traylor, David Butler and William Hawkins; mid-century paintings by Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Wayne Thiebaud; sculptures by Andy Warhol, Louise Nevelson and George Segal. The Museum continues to collect the art of its time such as work by Martin Puryear, Chakaia Booker, Elizabeth Murray, multiple works in a variety of media by such artists as Alexis Rockman, Willie Cole and Alison Saar. New media is represented by examples of video installations by Nam June Paik and Pepón Osorio.
Arts of Africa (45-60 minutes)
The Museum's African art collection ranks among the nation's oldest and most comprehensive, including outstanding examples of masks and figural sculpture, textiles and dress, pottery, jewelry, furniture, photography and paintings. The works range from historic artifacts, primarily dating to the late 19th and early 20th century to examples of contemporary artistic creativity. The continental scope of the collection is a particular strength.

The African gallery showcases works from the Yoruba of Nigeria and the Asante of Ghana. Among the highlights are a towering Epa masquerade headdress by the Yoruba sculptor Bamboye and a rare Tsogo door from Gabon. An array of jewelry features ivory adornments from the Congo, silver pendants from Niger, beadwork from South Africa and a suite of gold jewelry from Zanzibar. The gallery includes examples of African textiles and encompasses several hundred examples of weaving traditions of sub-Saharan Africa as well as factory printed textiles and historic and contemporary examples of dress from across the continent.

In keeping with its historic commitment to living artists, the Museum's African collection has a growing emphasis on contemporary art work including popular urban art forms, such as a cement sculpture by Sunday Jack Akpan, studio portrait photography by Seydou Keita and Samuel Fosso and critically acclaimed art works by internationally renowned artists such as El Anatsui, Sam Nhlengethwa and Wosene Kosrof.
Arts of Asia (60 minutes)
The Museum’s collections of the Arts of Asia were established in 1909 with the very founding of the Museum.

Japan: One of the major Japanese collections in the eastern United States, including lacquer, netsuke, ukiyo-e prints, textiles, ceramics, decorative arts, paintings and sculptures from the Heian to Heisei Periods (794 to present day) with especial concentrations in art from the Edo, Meiji and Showa Periods (1615-1989).

China: The Chinese collection numbers over 8,000 objects having particular strengths in ceramics, textiles, enamels, lacquer wares and bronzes dating to the Qing Dynasty.

Korea: The first Korean objects entered the Museum’s collection with its founding in 1909 dating from the Goryeo Dynasty (37 BC – 668 AD) to 2006, ceramics, costumes and textiles as well as an emphasis on Joseon Period (1392-1910) Buddhist, Neo-Confucian, literati and folk paintings are highlights.

South and Southeast Asia: Philippine materials form the largest portion of the Southeast Asian holdings. Approximately 3,500 objects represent works portraying deities of the Hindu, Jain and Buddhist traditions from India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia.

Tibet Collection
The most distinctive collection of Tibetan art in the Western Hemisphere is on view. The Museum's collection of Tibetan art numbers over 5,000 objects. Beginning in 1911 medical missionaries transferred remarkable items from along the Sino-Tibetan border to the Museum. Paintings, sculptures, ritual objects, fine textiles, documentary photographs and decorative arts are featured in the galleries through such themes as the Tibet Information Zone—an interactive, educational resource for individuals and families on Tibetan life and culture—as well as the Chapel of the Masters; Chapel of Fierce Protectors; Pure Lands and Paradises and three galleries devoted to the arts of Tibetan secular life.Ballantine House: House & Home (45-60 minutes)
Built in 1885 for Jeannette and John Holme Ballantine of the celebrated Newark beer-brewing family, this brick and limestone mansion originally had 27 rooms, including eight bedrooms and three bathrooms. Part of The Newark Museum since 1937, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. Two floors of the Ballantine House are interpreted as a suite of galleries called "House & Home," which includes eight period rooms, two hallways and six thematic galleries, all filled with things that might have been found in people's homes from the 1650s to the present. The spring of 1891, nearly six years after the Ballantines moved in, is the time to which the period rooms are restored. Together they represent a "case study" of what the "ideal home" meant in America over a century ago. The first-floor rooms include the Billiard Room, the Parlor, the Reception Room, the Library and the Dining Room. The Music Room offers an interactive experience called Make Yourself at Home. Upstairs, three private family rooms have been restored to their Victorian look: the Master Bedroom, Mrs. Ballantine's Boudoir and Alice Ballantine's Bedroom.Classical Art (30 minutes)
The Museum's art of the ancient Mediterranean cultures—Egypt, the Near East, Greece and Rome—includes a remarkable array of ancient glass and classical antiquities that illustrates glassmaking over a 2,500 year period. The Egyptian Collection features the mummy case of Henet-Mer (pictured at left), as well as sculpture, writing and funerary objects that provide a view of life in ancient Egypt, from Neolithic times through the Roman period. Unusual holdings of the Coptic art of Christian Egypt include rare textiles, pottery, sculpture and paintings. Sculpture from Greece, Rome, Cyprus and Etruria are also important pieces in the collections.Highlights Tour (60 minutes)
