Although initially many smaller sellers were angered by eBay’s 2008 alliance with Buy.com because Buy.com does not pay listing fees and its volume, free shipping, and ability to take returns hurt smaller sellers, this alliance is one of the largest potential revenue generators for eBay. Buy.com is a middle-of-the-market tool that links retailers with buyers, and it immediately added five million fixed-price listings to the eBay marketplace. eBay executives have responded to the objections about its alliance with Buy.com by stating, eBay is aggressively using price as a lever to improve the value and selection on eBay.com. Consistent with our goals, we have entered into a partnership with Buy.com to bring their new-in season merchandise onto eBay.com. We expect to learn a great deal from this partnership and we will build upon the results.
