The popliteal vein originates from the confluence of the
anterior and posterior tibial veins at the inferior margin of
the popliteus muscle. It ascends through the popliteal
fossa to the aperture in the adductor magnus muscle,
where it becomes the femoral vein. The popliteal vein
receives tributaries that correspond to the branches of the
popliteal artery. It also typically receives the SSV. There are
usually 4 valves in the popliteal vein. Popliteal valvular
competence is particularly important to the function of the
calf muscle pump.
