Another service industry that works with people is the hospitality industry. let's meet Cath who works in a hotel. Cath's day is full of new people. She works at the front office desk at the Chris Flemington Hotel where she works shift including days, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
She loves to help the people who are staying at this hotel. When they first arrive she takes the guests details and gives them a room. As many of the guests are tourists or business people from out of state, she's often asked for advice about the best places to visit, places to eat and how to get there.
She also organizes a lot of services for the people staying at the hotel such as laundry, taking messages, cashing travelers checks and making travel and sightseeing bookings. Once they leave the hotel she works out the guests bill and takes their payments. When she isn't assisting guests in person, Cath is taking bookings on the phone or by email. Some of the shifts are very busy and she's working with other staff on the reception desk. During the night shift when it's quiet, Cath works alone.
Cath completed a two-year advanced diploma in hospitality management at TAFE. in this course she was trained about all areas of Hotel management including food, accommodation, front office, sales and finances.
She hopes to be a team leader in this front office area soon, then move into management with the hope of one day of being a hotel manager. She might consider going back to university one day to go onto a bachelor of business in hospitality management. Here is an example of the pathway for someone who wants to start at TAFE and work their way through to University in hospitality management. however if you finish secondary school you can apply for the bachelors degree without studying at TAFE first.
