Assessment strategies useful for metacognition that can be wrapped into other assessments include
• “think-alouds,” where students talk, think, and record thought processes;
• written responses to and reflections on writing prompts;
• graphic organizers of work that can be completed while the work is in progress or retrospectively as students considers the process or outcomes;
• anecdotal records;
• student conferences;
• learning wrappers used to record thinking as students work; and
• questionnaires and self-reporting instruments that give students insight into their work
