Writing skills
The participants also faced difficulties in using writing skills. Writing e-mails
and memos were considered the most difficult skills for them during the practicum. It
is possible that they may not have learnt this writing style in the university. Since this
is a formal style of writing, grammar accuracy and the use of flowery language are all
essential, and this kind of written work can reflect the image and language proficiency
of people working in the company. For instance, Li So-mui and Mead (2000)
investigated English needs of textile and clothing merchandisers in the international
marketplace. The results indicated that the participants were alert to the very definite
likelihood that they would need to communicate in English with customers, especially
writing. Faxing was the most preferred channel of communication. The reasons for
communicating were to describe products, follow up on an order, advise on updated
order status and clarify order queries.
