The Special Prize Category of the JEC Innovation Awards was granted to the BMW group this year for its new electric vehicle architecture design using carbon fibers reinforced plastic-based composites. Its innovative concept, named LifeDrive, consists in designing and manufacturing two separate functional units. The upper module (passenger cell) is made out of CFRP, which allowed compensating the extra weight of the battery. Furthermore, this passenger cell is extremely strong, which ensures a high level of safety, thanks to the high stiffness of carbon fibers. Such progress in the automotive sector clearly announces a huge increase of the use of CFRP in cars, thus a huge outcome for carbon fiber manufacturers.
