Electronic trip unit technology provides some distinct advantages for motor control applications. First, is the ability to shape the time-current curve to a specific application or load profile. Secondly, electronic trip units provide a wide setting range due to current transformers that detect over- current conditions and output a signal that is used for a tripping command. The third advantage is precision, where electronic trip systems can provide a trip accuracy of +/-5% where a comparable electro-mechanical design could be four times greater. This added precision becomes helpful when coordinating time-current curves of the circuit breaker and overload relays.
