Welcome to the library!
Did you know that the library is always open? It is if you visit the library online via a computer, mobile phone or tablet PC. At any time of day or night, you can access reading recommendations or tips on what’s happening at the various City of Stockholm libraries. You don’t need a library card to get tips online or to take part in the libraries’ various events.
Borrow books, films and music or read newspapers online
If you wish to borrow something, however, you do need a library card – which is free of charge. Once you have a library card you can borrow e-books and newspaper articles directly via computer, some mobile phones and some tablet PCs. You can also borrow books, films and discs in all City of Stockholm libraries.
Once you have a library card you can also search several different factual databases offered by the library, either remotely via your own computer or on the library’s computers. The databases include, for instance, articles from various newspapers and journals, information about grants and resources for genealogy.
Computers and wireless connection at the library
Also, did you know that nearly all libraries have computers you can use if you have a library card? Most libraries have a computer available to use for a short period, but if you need to use a computer for a longer period you can book a time. If you bring your own computer, you can use the library’s wireless network to connect to the Internet free of charge.
If you are studying
The library has study spaces and group rooms you can book if you wish to study alone or with others. Certain libraries offer help with homework at fixed times.
Ask a librarian!
Library staff can help you find books and other media you are looking for. If you have a more difficult task you need help with, you can book an appointment with a librarian for a longer time. There is extra support for blind and partially sighted people, and people with reading difficulties.
For small children and their parents
The library offers many activities for small children, usually in separate children’s book sections with space for children and adults. Most libraries offer sing-songs, theatre, films and activity sessions all year round – with extra activities during the school holidays.
The library card

• search the library databases from home
• book a computer or use the wireless network at the library.
Applying for a library card
Register as a borrower with us by completing and returning a registration form. You can fill in the form here on the website or when you next visit the library.
Once you have registered, you can become a temporary patron. This means that you can borrow up to 5 e-books and reserve up to 5 books. The account is valid for 7 days. You become a temporary patron by logging in with your personal identification number and the PIN code you have chosen, and approve an agreement. If you are under 18 you can not become a temporary patron.
Pick up your library card from the library within a month of signing up on the site. Please bring photo ID. Bear in mind that you will have to provide a valid home address in Sweden to register.
If you’re under 18
If you are under 18 years old and do not have formal identification, your parent or guardian must sign your registration form. Either download the form here on the website or collect it when you next visit the library. Pick up your library card from the library.
About your PIN code
You need a 4-digit PIN code for your library card. You choose a PIN code when you register. If you miss or forget your PIN code, you can get a new PIN sent to the e-mail address you have provided. Click on Forgot PIN code? and fill in your details to get a new PIN by e-mail. You can also get help to choose a new PIN code at the nearest library. Please bring photo ID.
You can change your PIN code here on the website. Log in using your library card number and your current PIN.
If you lose your card
It is important to block your library card if you lose it. You are responsible for all loans on your card – even if someone else uses it. Call or visit your nearest library to have the card blocked.
If you know your card number, you can block your card here on the website. Log in using your library card number and pin.
You cannot borrow, renew or log in at Biblioteket.se while your library card is blocked. If you find your card, come to the library and we will remove the block. Please bring photo ID. A new library card costs SEK 20.
