How do ants find their way home? As they run along the ground, small hollows and mound of earth prevent the seeing landmarks. Many of ants blind. For these blind ants, the senses of touch and smell are the greatest help. The sense of smell in the insect is located in or feelers. Have you noticed that these feelers are always moving? The ants up pick up smells not only in the air but also on the ground. The smell of their nest guides them back to it. If you lift up an ant moving towards the nest and put it down in another spot on the path, it will start off in the right direction again.....
Some ants also use the direction of the sun's rays in finding their way. A mirror was once to change the direction of the light rays falling on to the path. First the sun shine had fallen from the west. Now it shone from the east on the moving army of ants. They tuned round and moved in opposite direction.....
