Many studies have been conducted using the hedonic approach to value environmental externalities
caused by noise, traffic, air pollution and landfills.
Smith and Huang (1995), for example, summarize 37
studies carried out between 1967 and 1988 in which
the hedonic technique is applied to value an air quality improvement in certain USA cities. Simons et al.
(1997) mention more recent works in which housing prices are related with the underground water
contamination, the existence of high power electric
networks and hazardous waste landfills.Ferreiro and
Sotelsek (1992), and Espey and Lopez (2000), apply
this methodology to evaluate the effects caused by
acoustic contamination
