A British boy has drowned in a swimming pool just one day after his family arrived on holiday in the Algarve.
The two-year-old died at a rented private house near the tourist area of in the popular resort of Quinta do Paraiso on Saturday.
He had been left with male relatives while his mother went shopping with his grandmother, according to local reports
Paramedics tried to revive him at the scene but could do nothing to save him.
Vítor Rio, commander of the local voluntary firefighter force in Lagoa, said: 'We received the alert around 3pm on Saturday about a young child that had drowned in the swimming pool of a private villa.
'We were told to head to Quinta do Paraíso where someone would be waiting for us to take us to the villa.
'We found two men in the house. We didn't focus on understanding what had happened, only on trying to save the child, who was already out of the pool.
'We tried to revive him for around one hour without success.'
He said the police were now investigating.
'It appeared to us two men were at home with the baby while two women were out shopping.'
