Risk CommunicationRisk communication is the process of engaging stakeholders (all interestedparties, including consumers, producers, scientists in academia, industry, andgovernment, and various professional or advocacy organizations) in dialoguesabout risk, its assessment, and its management. The risk assessor might takeresponsibility for explaining in nontechnical terms the data, models, and resultsof the risk assessment. The risk manager is responsible for explaining therationales for various alternative risk management strategies based on the riskassessment. The stakeholders also have a responsibility both to communicatetheir concerns and to review and understand the risk assessment and risk management options. Some principles for agencies to apply in risk communicationsare listed in Table 3.3.
