An amendment to Commission Regulation (EU) 574/2011) has been agreed by the Commission’s Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) Working Group on 3 June 2013. The amendment removes the maximum nitrite level in products intended for animal feed from alcoholic beverage production.
Some animal feeds including by-products from sugar beet, sugar cane and from starch production already enjoyed exemption from the maximum levels for nitrite in feed materials while nitrite levels in those products and appropriate methods of analysis are further examined.
As regards nitrite, for products and by-products from sugar beet and sugarcane and from the starch production no maximum level applies for the time being. In the light of developments in scientific and technical knowledge the same should apply to products and by-products from alcoholic drink production.
The amendment agreed to on 3 June brings the requirements for by-products from distilleries (and other alcoholic beverage production) into line with other sector by-products.
