Pseudorate constants appear to increase with increasing ionic strength. As expected, trials that are more dilute in hypochlorite are affected to a greater extent by the change from water to 1.6 M NaCl. That explains why, when using the original protocol, the higher ratios (namely, entries 2, 3, and 5 in Table 1) have larger discrepancies from the theoretical values. There was no significant effect on Trial 4, which has high ionic strength in
either case. The identity of the ionic compound does not appear to be important. A similar improvement in the ratios was observed with 1.6 M KNO3.
