Gender and Self-Efficacy
There was not a statistically significant difference in self-efficacy scores or perceived barriers for boys and girls. Thus, this study does not support the findings of previous investigations that have reported self-efficacy or perceived competence values as significantly higher for boys compared to girls (Cardon et al., 2005; Eyler et al., 2006).
Gender and Beliefs
Contrary to the findings by Cardon et al. (2005), girls reported significantly higher Beliefs scores than boys. A possible explanation for this is the participant age difference in the two studies. Cardon et al. (2005) used a study sample of ten and 11 year-old children while seven and eight year-old children participated in the current study. Looking at the individual Belief items more closely, significantly more boys perceived being physically active everyday would make them get hurt. This may be associated with the types of activities available to boys (i.e. baseball, football) as well as the time of year the study was performed (early May).
(Cardon, et al, 2005;.. eyler et al, 2006).
