In our study, 67% of the infections were of odontogenic
origin and 14% from skin. This supports the findings of similar
studies, both recent and from the data 30e40 years ago.2 A
high rate of odontogenic infection is not surprising, as reports
show that 92% of adults aged 20 to 64 have dental caries in
their permanent teeth, and 23% of adults have untreated
decay. Untreated dental decay leads to periapical infection,
which can result in severe facial swellings, which need in patient hospital management. 94% of the patients in this
study presenting with odontogenic infections had periapical
pathology.
