Even though you may not know what career direction you will choose, it is a good idea to practise setting goals. By setting goals for personal growth, skills development, learning or career exploration, you create a sense of purpose. You practise the skills you need to set and achieve goals, which will help you through the transition from high school to post-secondary studies and beyond.
A long-term goal is often set for a year or more in the future; for example, "I will be accepted into a web design program by the time I graduate from high school." Usually, you reach a long-term goal by achieving several smaller, short-term goals.
A short-term goal is typically set for a time, hours, days or weeks in the future; for example, "By the end of the month, I will finish the design for my website homepage."
Use the next activity to identify something you want to achieve—a long-term goal. You may want to use this activity for several different goals.
