A Kazakh Folktale
Aldar Kose and The Magic coat
One winter's day, Aldar Kose was riding through the steppe. It was very cold, and he had only an old, torn coat to wear. He tried to ride faster, but his old horse would not move any faster.
Suddenly, he saw a rider on a beautiful horse coming quickly toward him. The rider was wearing a warm, thick coat. Soon, Aldar Kose recognized him as a local rich man. This man was very greedy and selfish. Aldar Kose soon thought up a cunning plan.
He moved his hat to the side of his head and opened his torn coat. Then, he sat up straight, and started singing a happy song, acting as if he wasn't cold at all.
The rich man was surprised Aldar Kose was acting this way. He rode up, and asked," Are you really not cold?"
"Your coat may by warm, but mine me is making me hot," replied Aldar Kose.
"How can your coat make you hot?" said the rich man, "It is so thin, and there are holes in it!"
"it is a magic coat," said Alder Kose. “The holes let out the cold, and the warmth stays with me.” Alder Kose looked so comfortable the man believed him. At once, the greedy man wanted the "magic coat" for himself. He wanted to buy it, but Alder Kose refused.
"I will give you my coat in exchange! It is very warm." said the rich man.
Alder Kose still refused. "But, if you give me your horse too, I will think about it," he said.
The rich man agreed. Alder Kose took off his old coat and came dowe from his horse. He put on the warm, thick coat, got onto the rich man's horse, and quickiy rode off across the steppe.
