One species, the mountain tapir, has short legs and long brown or black hair. It lives in the Andes mountains, between 2,000 and 4,500 metres, and it is cold up there. But farmers cut down the trees, and the tapirs must move. People hunt them for food or because they like hunting. Other people take the tapirs' feet for medicine. There are only about 2,500 of these animals now, and in twenty years there are not going to be any mountain tapirs.
