History
Portland Steel was established just after WWII by the Carey family of Seattle, Washington. The family had been in shipbuilding and logging for 100 year and as war broke out in Europe they realized they would need to do something about the extensive delays in shipment of steel bar and plate from eastern mills. Their answer was to start their own steel company and by 1985 the business was processing 1 000 000 tonnes per year through its three operations and contributing over 50 percent to the Carey Holding Company profits.
